A major faction in the Indonesian House of Representatives Friday urged the government to streamline the cabinet by removing or merging several ministries to making savings in the state budget.
The Social Justice Party (PKS), which controls 45 seats in the House, regarded the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono cabinet as being "too fat and inefficient."
"The cabinet needs to be streamlined," PKS faction chairman Mahfudz Siddiq was quoted by the Detikcom news website as saying.
He said the country doesn't need the Ministry of Communication and Information, while several other ministries can be merged into a single office.
The faction proposed that the Ministry of Public Housing and the Ministry for Development Acceleration in Economically Remote Areas be merged with the Coordinating Ministry for People's Welfare portfolios.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports should be combined into one office with the Ministry of National Education, said Siddiq.
The overlapping roles between the state secretary and the cabinet secretary also make it necessary for the two officials to work under the same office, he said.
Streamlining the cabinet is crucial for budget efficiency, "so that we can meet the targeted 20 percent education spending in the budget," he added.
